From a Backyard Business to a Reel Mower Specialist
Port City Engines & Reels began 23 years ago, repairing and servicing commercial equipment for local landscaping companies from the founder’s backyard.
Alongside building the business, the founder spent 18 years working for a high-end gated golf community, progressing to a senior mechanic position. It was there that working on reel mowers became a particular passion and helped shape the direction of the business.
Six years ago, that passion led to a big decision: investing in a set of grinders and taking the leap into the next chapter of Port City Engines & Reels.
As the founder puts it: “I still can't believe I get to do something I love every day.”
Meet the Team
Head Reel Technician Braxton and his wife, Office Manager Devon Lanier, have been part of Port City Engines & Reels for four years. Both play an important role in the business, supporting its customers and helping keep things running.
Together, the team brings around 25 years of experience in reel mower repairs and servicing. That practical knowledge comes from working with the machines every day and seeing the difference a properly maintained mower makes to a lawn.
The founder also credits the support of his wife, who has encouraged him throughout the journey of building the business.
Supporting the Reel Mowing Community
Although Port City Engines & Reels services a few local golf courses, most of its customers are residential and commercial mower owners. The team recognised a need to support individuals who struggled to find somewhere to take their reel mower for specialist care.
Today, they run collection and delivery routes across North and South Carolina, picking up reel mowers, grinding and servicing them, and returning them to customers’ doors.
For the team, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is receiving photographs of customers’ lawns after their mowers have been serviced. It is a reminder of why they enjoy their work and the community they are helping to support.
